Birding Excursion at OMS 2025
As fall settles in, Huck Finn’s Pond in Durango, CO becomes a gathering place for resident birds and the first winter arrivals. This special field trip, part of the Outdoor Media Summit 2025 and sponsored by Dometic, invites you to step outside the conference rooms and into the crisp autumn air, with the pond, cottonwoods, and willows providing the setting for an afternoon of birding and discovery.
Audubon Master Birder Alison Kondler (@birding_by_ear) will lead the walk, showing how tuning in to the sounds of nature can be just as rewarding as spotting the birds themselves.
At this time of year Huck Finn’s Pond and surrounding area holds a mix of resident and late-season birds. Mallards, wigeon, pintails, and ruddy ducks are common on the water, with grebes diving below the surface and herons working the shoreline. Hawks and kestrels often pass overhead. In the cottonwoods you may see flocks of robins and goldfinches, while sparrows move through the brush. Chickadees, nuthatches, flickers, and yellow-rumped warblers are regular voices in the trees as the season shifts toward winter.
This trip isn’t about identifying every bird. It’s about slowing down, noticing the soundscape, and letting the rhythms of nature calm our mind. Whether you’ve never picked up a pair of binoculars or you’ve been birding for years, you’ll come away with a fresh perspective and a few bird calls you won’t forget.
